SISTERHOOD

Writing this column makes me feel like a Time Traveler. It’s late June where I am, writing this column a week before July 4th. Where you are (reading this column), it’s August, with three weeks to go before Sisterhood’s kickoff meeting on Wednesday, August 25th at 10:00 am. By then (or now, depending on whether you’re writing this column or reading it!), I should know everything there is to know about Sisterhood!

I started my summer by going through two file boxes and one shopping bag full of Sisterhood memorabilia. My initial impulse was to throw away all the old flyers, newsletters, membership forms, etc., but once I found out that Sisterhood could have a whole file drawer in the Synagogue office, I grabbed my label maker and hanging files and set up shop in the mail room. The results are in the top drawer of the file cabinet outside Donna Tucker’s office – feel free to check it out, and if you are stashing any Sisterhood files at home, bring them in and I’ll find a home for them

Although it’s only June, Sisterhood is off and running. I spent the morning with Debby Koenigsberg and Fran Farkas sampling goodies for our Shira Baskets (what fun!!), which will be coming to you on September 1 and 2. By the time you get this Bulletin, you should have also received your Shira Basket order form. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE! Send in your orders ASAP, and earn the love of Loree Feiler and Didi Zeichner, our dedicated co-chairs. And be sure to join us for set-up and delivery on September 1 and 2.

After a tough morning of Shira Basket sampling, I had an afternoon lesson about Shiragrams. Wow – I had no idea how much work is involved in getting those lovely birthday/ anniversary/simcha greetings into our mailboxes. Fredi Applebaum, Linda Spiegelman, Loree Feiler, Cookie Wright, Madelyn Messinger and Harriet Frillarte function like a well-oiled Shiragram machine! Thanks, ladies, for doing this job – it’s one of the many ways Sisterhood transforms Bet Shira from “just a temple” into a family.

Right now, Esther Bialilew, our Membership VP, is being kept very busy processing Sisterhood membership applications. Thanks to all of you who have signed up. If you haven’t sent your membership form in yet, now would be a good time to do that! Esther, thank you for getting us off to a great start!

There’s no summer break for Fran Farkas and Philis Edelman, our very own “Shop Girls.” With merely a few display windows between the sanctuary and the office, these ladies have made Bet Shira a shopping destination for those who know their Judaica. And on top of great merchandise at a good price, you get unbelievable service (with a smile, no less). Keep Sisterhood’s gift shop in mind for all your holiday and gift-giving needs.

This year, Sisterhood is once again offering Bet Shira members the opportunity to order New Year’s cards from the convenience of our Synagogue office or your own home. Sisterhood member Lisa Gitlin of Everything Paper has left her sample book in the office. Check it out, and then call Lisa at 305.962.2730 or email her at everything.paper@yahoo.com.

And to complete your holiday celebration, be sure to order your holiday flowers by emailing Iane Deutsch at skdidd@bellsouth.net.

One last thing: Sybil Lucoff, you are the best! Thanks for shopping and “schlepping” for the Summer Shul Kiddush every week.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Tall Vertical Seder Plate by Artist Gary Rosenthal

Like a stairway to heaven, the seder dishes spiral gently upwards. The names of the seder items are silkscreened in gold on the fused glass.
