Do
you know what a shoresh is? If not, ask a JEC student
in Ramah 3 or above at the JEC and they will tell you.
The Hebrew program that we piloted last year and implemented
this year, teaches our students about the shoresh of a
word, the root. That is to say, Hebrew words are based
off of three root letters that help you to understand
the meaning of the word (for example seder, siddur, beseder
all have the same root and meaning order – the Passover
seder has an order, the siddur house the order of our
prayers, and when things are going ok, it is all in order).
Our students, even our youngest students are learning
that they can make sense out of Hebrew by noticing the
root of the word. Our K-3 enjoy learning a Hebrew word
of the day with the Cantor and trying to connect the word
to another Hebrew word they have learned in the past.
At home, why not make a game of it – try and associate
one Hebrew word that you know and try and find others
that sound similar, you may be looking at a Shoresh. I’ll
start – Kiddush – you go next.
