A NOTE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

I would like to thank everyone for the gracious welcome that I have received here at Bet Shira Congregation. The energy and excitement that fills Bet Shira is so wonderful! I have had the opportunity to meet a great number of you either individually or in groups, in person or by phone. I even got to dance on the Bimah to celebrate at the kindergarten graduation!!! I am truly looking forward to working with you over the coming years. If you have a moment to stop by or call, I’d love to say hello.

WELCOME BACK BBQ

Everyone is getting ready for our annual Welcome Back BBQ that will be on Sunday, August 22nd, 4:00-6:00 pm. Come to Bet Shira and spend a great afternoon seeing old friends and making new acquaintances. The burgers will be cooked to perfection and there will be plenty of sauerkraut to eat with the hot dogs. For those who prefer less protein we will have veggie burgers, plenty of salads, there will be refreshments for all and chilled watermelon slices to help you cool down. The ECC PTA will sponsor a bounce house for the kids. Come see the original and beautiful decorations that have been donated by Parties by Lynn.

This is a FREE event thanks to the generosity of the Bet Shira Sisterhood for graciously funding this year’s BBQ. Visitors from around the area are welcome to attend. Please bring your friends and guests and introduce them to our welcoming Bet Shira community. All Bet Shira committees and departments will have tables set up to display their programs and to invite you to join in. So, bring your family, bring your friends, and enjoy the afternoon.

Tikkun Olam

The Tikkun Olam Committee is looking forward to an active year. We welcome all members of the Bet Shira family to participate in the activities planned for this year.

The Tikkun Olam Committee activities and projects are funded by Bet Shira’s generous donations. During the June meeting, the Tikkun Olam Committee Fund made allocations to the following: Camp Boggy Creek-Project Cradle, Community Partnership, Friends of the Israel Defense Forces, Jewish Community Service Kosher Food Bank, Joseph Samuel Isicoff Memorial Fund, Kehilat Morshet Avraham Synagogue – Jerusalem (Sister Synagogue), Kehillat Netzach Israel Synagogue- Ashkelon (Sister Synagogue), Lotus House, Masorti Foundation, MAZON, The Michael Grey Wheelchair Repair Fund, Shalom Bayit Miami, The Jewish Braille Institute, The Melissa Institute, and Ventilator Assisted Children’s Center Camp.

The Tikkun Olam Committee starts each year by collecting and distributing back packs and school supplies to residents at the Community Partnership Homeless Shelter and the Inn Transition Women’s Shelter. Back packs, for children of all ages, are needed. Place all school supplies in the Tikkun Olam bin outside the synagogue office prior to August 20, 2010. Please continue to support the Tikkun Olam’s project of donating food to the Kosher Food Bank. Nonperishable food may also be placed in the Tikkun Olam bin on an on-going basis.

Thank you to all who donated supplies to Camp Boggy Creek, a camp for critically ill or terminally ill children.

Please join us at the following meetings for 2010/2011 held on Tuesdays starting at 7:30 PM:

August 10, 2010
