Tikkun Olam

Tikkun Olam’s mission is to “Repair the World.” We have done this through projects and donations. The events in Haiti in January were catastrophic. In order to help, Bet Shira’s Tikkun Olam made a $500.00 donation for Haiti Relief through the Greater Miami Jewish Federation.

Thank you to Pris Adler and to all who volunteered at the Seymour Gelber Adult Day Care Center on February 21, 2010 where we restored neglected gardens.

MITZVAH DAY is coming, March 14, 2010. We hope you have had an opportunity to review the mailing on MITZVAH DAY and have signed up to do your share in repairing the world. This is an opportunity for families to join together and for all our members to select a worthwhile and gratifying project. Partner with Bet Shira’s Tikkun Olam Committee and sign up for Mitzvah Day. Our school children make sandwiches for the hungry; members donate blood, visit shelters, clean an area at the zoo, and plant trees. The B’nai Mitzvah students will have displays of the mitzvah projects in the lobby. At the synagogue, we will be collecting clothing to be distributed to shelters and various agencies. B’nai Mitzvah students will have displays of the mitzvah projects in the lobby. At the synagogue, we will be collecting clothing to be distributed to shelters and various agencies. This is a day of excitement and dedication and we ask everyone to help in some way. Do your Mitzvah with us! Please call Carol Stein to volunteer or with any questions.

Please remember that every time you come to Bet Shira think about bringing a non-perishable kosher food item for those less fortunate for the Community Kosher Food Bank. Items they need are as follows: canned vegetables, canned fruits, grape juice, rice, mayonnaise, oil, peanut butter, tuna, breakfast cereal, and pasta. Other items they can use all the time: school supplies, diapers, and baby food.

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE

The much awaited Progressive Dinner was held on Saturday evening, January 23rd. A large crowd of enthusiastic congregants started the evening with hors d’oeuvres at the beautiful home of Iane and Steve Deutsch. The weather was great and our hosts were very welcoming. At approximately 7:45 pm we split into different groups for the main dinner course and wine at the homes of Messrs. Blum, Hochman, Lichtman, Serota, Shapiro, Sleeman and Stein. After dinner we all re-grouped at the home of Marleen and Martin Applebaum for Havdalah, dessert and coffee. Everyone was raving about the delicious dinners that they had at the main course host homes and were enjoying the lovely desserts that the Applebaum’s had provided.

Rabbi Caplan and Cantor Kula led the group in a short and moving Havdalah ceremony, after which we sang Happy Birthday to a surprised Susie Novak. Carol Stein is congratulated for leading the organization of this memorable evening.
